Hedi Silmane photographs Francis Bean Cobain.

I have to admit, I do have a slight obsession with all things Nirvana, and this recent photo shoot of the front man’s daughter, Francis Bean Cobain, are stunning! Hedi Silmane photographs in her signature monochrome style that works beautifully with Francis’s striking blue eyes and strong jaw line reminiscent of Kurt’s.

I want this T-shirt!

Tyran Simon At the Tate Modern

I saw an exhibition by this incredible American Photographer around four years ago. I came across her actually by accident when in London and  walked past the Photographers Gallery ( definitely worth a visit!) At the time she was exhibiting 'An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar'. I was particularly astounded by the beautifully haunting photograph of a mentally disabled tiger named Kenny, a condition brought on by selective inbreeding . In fact the whole exhibition was so extraordinary, I am hoping to get the book for my birthday! hint hint!

I have since been on a constant  look out for more of her work, which is thought- provoking, captivating and often disturbing. So you can imagine my excitement when I found out she was showing at the Tate! Her current exhibition ' A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters' took her four years of research to put together, recording  bloodlines and their related stories. The Photography is laid out as though in a catalogue, but the stories which follow the images are outstanding.  In fact the Portraits which are left blank (where family members wish not to be recognised) often speck just as much as the others that surround them. She documents feuding families of Brazil, the body double of Saddam Hussein's son Uday, as well as animal testing on Rabits in Austrailia! The Exhibition is on until the 2nd of January 2012 and I definitely would recommend it. Take my word for it she is an artist worth visiting!!!

Martin Margiela

For my course we are currently studying the work of Maison Martin Margiela. This involved a trip to his London store, which was fascinating.

He has obviously been inspired by my blog. The decoration is fabulous! Ok thats a little ridiculous, but the decoration is amazing. Everything is white and clinical; very atmospheric! The only way I could describe it is as though lost memories are being tested on in a lab. It's incredible.

And his clothing enhance this. Their mesmerising cuts are exquisite. Me and my friend spent two hours trying to figure out how you could possibly even begin to design something so complicated! We learnt through this project that he is a master of de and reconstruction, often deliberately showing areas of lining, seams and hems to give the garment's structure. Even the fastenings such as zips and velcro are deliberately exposed!

Sharp lines and juxtapositions of sculpture and drapery, with the use of silks, wools, satins and faux furs give the clothing a very edgy, futuristic appearance. There is an elegance to the pieces. Colours tended to be neutral with occasional throws of colour. His pieces also have an underlying sadistic humour which I loved.
